01/10/2012 - Food Management Systems, Critical to Survival PDF Print E-mail

January 10th, 2012, Free Webinar hosted by our partners in section 801

Many forces are at work in order to help transform the food industry.  Recent food industry scares, the retail industry adoption of GFSI standards and the Food Safety Modernization Act are all factors that are encouraging/mandating the use of Food Safety Management System standards such as FSSC 22000, BRC, and SQF. Many tier one suppliers to retailers have already adopted these standards, following in the footsteps of Walmart and several others that announced their adoption of the GFSI approach.

In addition, a recent  survey of the largest retailers by The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) showed that many of the largest retailers rated Sustainability and Carbon Zero Footprint as even more important than Food Safety in the Food Supply Chain. It certainly appears that environmental standards with integrated Carbon Footprint and Sustainability standards is gaining importance to many food organizations. At the same time, some of the largest food organizations like Dean Foods and Nestle are moving in the direction of adopting ISO 9001, Food Safety Management Systems, OHSAS 18001, and ISO 14001 Integrated management systems.

Are these the signs of things to come in the food industry? What do these standards mean? Are they easy to implement? How does an organization benefit from these standards?
