Position Summary:

General Cable (NYSE: BGC), headquartered in Highland Heights, Kentucky, is a leader in the development, design, manufacture, marketing and distribution of copper, aluminum and fiber optic wire and cable products for the communications, energy, industrial and specialty markets.  The Company offers competitive strengths in such areas as breadth of product line, brand recognition, distribution and logistics, service and operating efficiency.  Communications wire and cable products transmit low-voltage signals for voice, data, video and control applications.  Energy cables include low-, medium- and high-voltage power distribution and power transmission products.  The Industrial and Specialty segment is comprised of application-specific cables for uses such as electrical power generation (traditional fuels, alternative and renewable sources, and distributed generation), the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, mining, industrial automation, marine, military and aerospace applications, power applications in the telecommunications industry, and other key industrial segments.

 

The Willimantic, CT facility produces specialty wire and cable for the industrial, marine, military, marine, nuclear and transit markets.

 

The Quality Engineer is a professional level position, reporting to the Quality Manager.  This individual will provide the technical coordination of our quality system.  The incumbent will continuously improve our quality system, be a primary point of contact on issues of quality with our internal and external customers and deploy quality policy throughout the organization.

 

The incumbent will establish, implement, direct, and maintain quality assurance and scrap control programs and procedures throughout the various stages of manufacturing to assure a finished product with the highest quality possible and while keeping material scrap at a minimum. In addition, this position is responsible for maintaining the plant's ISO and other quality system registration and qualifications and provide direct contact with customers and UL, MIL, NQA and other regulatory agency representatives.

 

Principle Functional Responsibilities:

1.     Established testing protocols and procedures in compliance with governing purchase orders and customer specifications

2.     Conducts testing and determines compliance to all published test, inspection requirements, and customer, industry, and plant specifications for all raw materials, in-process and finished products in the most efficient manner

3.     Maintain records to provide analyzed data reports as necessary to aid in production control, as well as compliance with established product specifications for customers.

4.     Develop, establish, implement and maintain a quality assurance and scrap control program that meets all specifications and is communicated to all necessary departments

5.     Select, train and develop quality assurance employees so that their work is in accordance with accepted practices

6.     Review and compare all published General Cable Corporation design specifications, customer, UL, and CSA specifications and maintenance of quality levels for internal and customer review

7.     Conduct audits for all test equipment and manufacturing equipment for conformance to corporate safety regulations

8.     Facilitate customer and regulatory agency inspections. Develop a thorough knowledge of the documentation associated with the various inspections and communicates to the plant

9.     Investigate returned materials due to quality complaints as requested and insure that the necessary corrective action is initiated to prevent recurrence

10. Use statistically based tools to lead root cause and corrective action efforts to reduce process variability and defects

11. Perform other reasonable  assigned tasks by direct management and customers

 

Supervision Scope: Direct supervision of technical support and on a project by project basis.

 

Key Requirements:

1.     A results driven individual who has demonstrated ability working in a high performance manufacturing environment.

2.     Proven experience in quality assurance systems

3.     Must have good attention to details, but be able to manage the big picture

4.     Must be able to manage multiple, complex tasks and deal easily with pressure on a day in and day out basis

5.     Must be able to motivate, communicate and drive continuous improvement

6.     Critical thinker, with excellent analytical abilities

7.     Good written and oral communication skills

8.     Solid planning , leadership and administrative skills

9.     High energy, demonstrates urgency

10. Good understanding of business principles and practices; can understand impact of quality function to overall business results

11. Experience in Root Cause analysis, corrective actions, Lean/Six Sigma, ISO

 

Desired Background:

1.     Minimum of five years of quality assurance experience, strong manufacturing background; able to understand and develop appropriate product specifications

2.     Strong database background, comfortable with a variety of software systems,  including spreadsheets

3.     Experience in ISO and other major quality systems, nuclear and military systems preferred.

 

Preferred Candidate:

4.     More that five years of experience in the military, nuclear or other highly regulated industry background

5.     ASQ Certified Quality Engineer or CQA and/or Six Sigma Blackbelt

6.     Electrical products or Wire & Cable experience a plus

7.     With hands on RF/Signal (VSWR, Attenuation, etc)

 

Education:

BS degree in engineering or related practical science: with a strong foundation in business administration
